Ono Tsuba

A Momoyama / early Edo Ono sukashi tsuba/ Mitsu Aoi no Zu (picture of three hollyhocks), the Tokugawa family mon. 7.37 cm x 7 cm x 6.6 mm. Good dark patina, keibori detailing, globular tekotsu in the mimi. Ono tsuba are generally thick. There are very few larger Ono tsuba. The Ono took their name from the village of Ono, in Owari province (modern Nagoya). I suspect, without any proof, that like Yagyu, that they were catering to a school of fencing.
